Register of Completion Classes and School Enrollment, 1897–1948

This series consists of the official records of students who completed classes (1897-1940) and of students enrolled (1940-1948). Information provided for the years 1897, 1907, and 1929 consists of name only. For completion classes 1910 through 1915 the information is name and home address. For completion years of 1916-1927 the information is name, home address, and tribal affiliation. For completion class years 1931-1940 the information is name, tribe and agency, degree of blood, age and date entered, grade entered, parent or guardian, date leaving, and reason for leaving (completed course). Starting with the school year 1940-1941 the heading is changed to school enrollment, with each class listed separately and the entries under reason for leaving contain notations other than completed course.

Established in 1893, the Pipestone Indian School was built on land taken from the Yankton reservation at the Pipestone Quarry. The Yankton people long contested that loss and won before the Supreme Court in 1926. In 1894 the formation of the Pipestone Indian Training School was authorized on the uninhabited Yankton Pipestone reservation.
